Africa will soon have its first commercial deployment
of WiMAX network. ZTE Corporation (¡§ZTE¡¨), a leading global provider
of telecommunications equipment and network solutions has recently
signed a framework agreement with Libya Telecom & Technology (LTT)
to help build a large scale WiMAX 802.16e commercial network in the
continent, covering eight major cities in Libya including its capital,
Tripoli.
Under
the agreement, ZTE will provide a series of distributed and end-to-end
IP WiMAX product solutions including compact and high-capacity base
stations, access gateway, network management system, MPLS (Multiprotocol
Label Switching) and IMS (IP Multimedia System). The network is
expected to be completed and ready for service by the third quarter
of 2008.
In
deploying the WiMAX network in Libya, ZTE will be installing MIMO
(Multiple-input and Multi- output), OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency
Division Multiple Access) and high-efficiency power amplifiers,
among other key technologies. These will help enhance the coverage
radius of the network and reduce the required number of base stations,
allowing LTT to efficiently speed up network installation. Once
the network is up and running, subscribers in Libya will have various
wireless access services including VoIP (Voice Over IP), high-speed
download and mobile television using wireless broadband connections.
Chen
Jiewen, ZTE Corporation Chief Representative in Libya, said, ¡§ZTE
is pleased to closely collaborate with LTT in deploying the first
ever and highly reliable WiMAX commercial network in Africa, demonstrating
ZTE¡¦s global leading position in providing WiMAX solutions. We expect
the deployment of the network to trigger more similar WiMAX deployments
in other African countries, and we are committed to providing our
expertise and solutions to realize these opportunities.¡¨
¡§We
are extremely pleased to partner with ZTE in building the first
WiMAX commercial network in Africa. With the deployment of WiMAX
in key cities in Libya, we will be able to provide the Libyan population
the most effective wireless and highly advanced communications platform
to enjoy access of various wireless services,¡¨ said Mahmoud Bashir
Alteir, LTT¡¦s WiMAX Project Manager.
ZTE
is one of the biggest champions in the WiMAX industry, according
to an iSuppli report ¡§WiMAX: The Best Opportunity for China Vendors¡¨
published in October 2007.
The
company has clinched a major WiMAX terminal procurement contract
with Sprint Nextel, the third largest mobile operator in the United
States. ZTE supplied Sprint Nextel a series of WiMAX solutions with
PC card and Modem products equipped with Wave2 functions. It has
also built 21 commercial trials of WiMAX 802.16e network in other
markets including Singapore, Thailand and Saudi Arabia.
Today,
ZTE is one of the world¡¦s WiMAX equipment manufacturers and amongst
one of the pioneers to invest in WiMAX Research and Development.
It is also the only Chinese company among 15 Board of Directors
in the WiMAX Forum.
